Buff Miller and Melody A. Hadley are our May CLE speakers.  Topics will include ethical considerations in Florida; bar rules; Chapter 120, Florida Statutes; anecdotes; case law and a thrilling Question and Answer period. Elizabeth "Buff" Miller is an Assistant Attorney General in the Ethics Bureau for the Office of the Attorney General (OAG). She prosecutes public officials and public employees who violate the Florida Code of Ethics, located in Chapter 112, Florida Statutes, presents cases before the Florida Commission on Ethics, and provides ethics training to OAG employees. Melody A. Hadley is also an Assistant Attorney General in the Ethics Bureau for the OAG. She represents the Commission on Ethics in administrative law and enforcement proceedings and publishes ethics opinions.

Ms. Brooks graduated from FSU Law, magna cum laude, in December 2007. She is a Charter Member of the Democratic Women's Club of Leon County and currently serves as its Second Vice President. Additionally, she is a contributing columnist to the Tallahassee Democrat, where she writes about legal issues affecting the Tallahassee area.

Join us this month for an exciting and important panel on the constitutional right to bear arms in our modern society.  Legal experts in the field will discuss the Second Amendment in its historical context, explore current firearm rights and gun control issues in Florida, and describe emerging issues in the field.  Among the panelists are Eric Friday of Florida Open Carry, FSU Law Professor Michael Morley and Constitutional Law Practitioner Jamy Dinkins. Assistant State Attorney Anna Norris will serve as moderator.  This will be our September membership meeting.

Contextualizing, Considering and Confronting Biases

G.C. Murray, Jr., Deputy General Counsel at the Florida Justice Association, will present "Contextualizing, Considering and Confronting Biases" at August's CLE luncheon. Mr. Murrary's presentation will discuss gender and racial biases in the legal field, with a special eye to how this relates to governmental affairs practice. Additionally, Mr. Murray will divulge tips on how to better detect implicit biases and how to overcome these biases in order to become better legal practitioners. Join us on Wednesday, August 22 at noon at the Capital City Country Club, located at 1601 Golf Terrace Drive, Tallahassee, Florida 32301. This CLE has been approved for 1.0 hour of bias elimination credit

July Membership Meeting and CLE on CRC!

This will be our July membership meeting.  Mr. Spicola will be our presenter.  He was the General Counsel of the Constitution Revision Commission. He previously served in the Governor’s Office as General Counsel from April 2016 through April 2017. Prior to that he served as the General Counsel at the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) from January 2015 to April 2016. He served in other roles in DPBR as Director of the Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco and the Chief Attorney in the Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering.  From 2012 to 2013, Spicola worked as a Senior Attorney at the Office of Insurance Regulation. Spicola also served as an Assistant State Attorney in the 2nd Judicial Circuit of Florida. He earned his bachelor’s and law degree from the University of Florida.

The CLE will discuss the procedures and process that led to the adoption of the amendments by the Constitution Revision Commission that will be on November's ballot, as well as a discussion of the amendments and their implications. There will also be time for audience questions.

Dean R. LeBoeuf is the managing partner at Brooks, LeBoeuf, Bennett, Foster & Gwartney, P.A. He focuses on complicated civil litigation in personal injury matters, including accidents involving negligent motor vehicle drivers, medical malpractice cases, and nursing home abuse and neglect.  He will present “The Anatomy of a Successful Trial”. During the presentation, Mr. LeBoeuf provides his colleagues with techniques and tools that he has developed and utilized during his 36 years of trial experience.

Alan Abramowitz, Executive Director of the Florida Statewide Guardian ad Litem Office, will present “A Voice Heard: Legislation Inspired by Youth in foster Care” which will focus on the representation of children in the statewide GAL program, a review of the GAP program and its initiatives and strategic plan based on listening to children in foster care,
and a discussion of GAL championed legislative proposals past and present.  This CLE has been approved for 1.0 hours General credit, and 1.0 hours Juvenile Law credit. 

This will also be our annual meeting for the Election of Officers
